They are ions with opposite charges arranged in a lattice. Their bonds are very strong like oppositely charged magnets. You could imagine that covalent bonds are like 2 magnets of the same charge bonding to a peice of metal which keeps them together. So obviously ionic bonding would be a lot stronger So yeah, basically the bonds are super strong which is why ionic compounds also have a very high melting point.

Add Contact Block Ionic solids are hard because they form lattice structures. This consists of the positive and negatively charged atoms forming a bond together in a very hard yet brittle structure. look up lattice structure in wikipedia for a picture.
